Would always start of strong but as soon as the gradient of the hill changed rapidly i would struggle and slow down, for most of the runs i was comftable running next to a 5k runner but he was more conistant and i would often fade on the last 20m of the hill

didnt have a very good night sleep and had picked up a cold so slepty in and decided not to run in the morning. however was not feeling much better by the evening so took the day off

This hill problem is the sort of thing I had as well a lot. It is because you have not been doing hard lacatate runs so when the pressure goes on your legs dont work as well. You can change it gradually by doing what you are doing!!!!
The reality is that many of these boys have had several years of hard cross country at a higher level than you and their chemistry is better developed across a wider range. Their hearts may also be working a bit lower and have a few more spare beats to play with.
Nothing to worry about really at this stage of your career. It took me until I was mid 20s and a lot stronger physically before I became good at hills. The first year I won the Army cross country I walked up a the hill on all three laps. It really annoyed the guy who was second!
You are a 400, 800 runner at the moment after all. Just think what the 5K runner tells his coach about you!!!!!

the more I think about long reps the more sure I am that for this year you should stick to threshold - and see what changes occur. This served you well last year so we should not change just for the sake of it.
